Here’s a great article about the 5700 XE courtesy of the Commercial Carrier Journal. Author Jason Cannon takes a spin in three models of the Western Star 57oo XE around Michelin’s Laurens, S.C. proving grounds – a day cab, a 68-inch high-roof, and an 82 inch sleeper, all with DT12 automatic manual transmissions. The two larger units were powered by a DD15 engine (14.8 liters, 505 hp) which easily handled their maxed out trailers. The day cab model was outfitted with an equally impressive DD13 (12.8 liters, 450 hp).
“Barely a quarter-mile into the drive and it’s easy to see why many fleets have gravitated to the 5700XE as reward for top drivers. It’s comfortable and not physically taxing to drive. And, of course, it’s badass.”
