Western Star 4900
Today we’re showing the Western Star 4900FA 123″ BBC, powered with the 600 hp Detroit DD16 engine. This rig starts with a 13,000 lb. front axle, 40,ooo lb. rears, spread across a 236” wheelbase, and by adding a 68” low roof sleeper and 250 gals of fuel, she is ready for Serious Truckin’!
Words From a Western Star Dealer
Mike Edge-Partington from Western Star Trucks gave us a little more information, as quoted from the dealer:
“Attached are pics of Kevin’s new tractor. Kevin is a longtime ‘Star’ loyalist, this is his 4th one— We started out here with 2 objectives:
- Make the unit light as possible, as Kevin’s job changed in that he was doing much more cross-border work, and his current 4900SB was too heavy—Kevin was locked in with an expensive drop-deck tridem trailer, so we had to make the tractor lighter
- Make the unit as maintenance free as possible – note the LED headlights, and the absence of ‘chicken lights’, driving lights – his job necessitated revolving beacons. We also decided to go with disc brakes all axles–
We were able to skim off 1900 lbs off the tractor weight – Leesa, Kevin’s wife is only 5’1” tall, so a 62” low sleeper OK – unit even has aluminum 5th wheel head, aluminum air tanks—unit tare’d in at 18,181#, and SpecPro weight was accurate—Now that the unit has operated for 2 ½ months, pleasant unexpected bonus, unit getting much improved fuel mileage over 2011 DD15 560/1850 3.73/1 ratio in 2011 4900SB—”
