Good morning, Western Nation! Hope you all have had a great week! why not start the start the weekend off early by enjoying the pics of this titan of towing?
This shiny, red machine sports a 118K GVWR door sticker which is the first thing you see as you make a 6-foot climb into the cab. Once you’re sitting in the driver’s seat and you wrangle the 20″ steering wheel, you have control of a 500HP Cummins ISX. There’s also an Allison 4700 transmission with an output retarder to drive the SPRC-1927 110,000-pound planetary rear crawler (they’re called “crawlers” because of the 12.69 axle ratio). These stats don’t lie—this rig has more than enough power to move anything and everything.
To make sure the engine and transmission are kept comfortable, we add an 1845-square inch Glacier copper/brass radiator under the hood. A special “Eidal” two-way oscillating stationary 5th wheel is specified to couple up to the 96-tire independent multi-link hydraulic steel trailer. When you connect one unit pulling to another unit pushing, moving as much as 650,000 pounds is a walk in the park!
Our thanks to Paul Gilipeau from Globocam WST in Boucherville, Quebec, Canada, for sharing this seriously heavy-duty rig from Western Star! Check back next week for a new Star of the Week. Happy hauling!
