Western Star gave Star Nation this great story about a customer’s love for their Western Star Trucks.
When Jack Daniels wants advice about the trucking business, he turns to one of his drivers — 84-year-old Dick Daniels, his father.
“He’s a real driver. He can run with the best of them,” Jack said of his father, who sold him Kandel Transport Inc. in 1993. Though the elder Daniels led Kandel for years, his real love was always driving and he jumped at the chance to get back behind the wheel after “retiring.”
Today, Dick can be found most often behind the wheel of one of the nine Western Star trucks Kandel has bought over the past two years for its 40-unit fleet.
An Akron, Ohio-based refrigerated carrier, Kandel is a regional hauler, transporting frozen food primarily in the corridor between Boston and Chicago, an “I-80, I-90 hauler,” as Daniels puts it. It operates a mixed fleet of reefer trucks. Their newest units are eight Western Star 4900 SB trucks bought last year and a Western Star 4700 purchased this year.
Daniels said the decision to buy Western Star was the result of a lot of research into the brand’s durability and the promise of greater efficiency from the Fuel Efficiency (FE) package on the 4900 SBs. The FE package includes a wrap-around bumper, roof fairing, under-hood air cleaners and horizontal or back-of-sleeper exhausts, as well as lightweight options.
That promise has come to pass, Daniels said, adding, “That engine is really doing well for us. We’re seeing really solid fuel mileage gains.” He also praised the trucks’ performance and rugged reliability.
Kandel keeps the outside of its trucks simple — white trailers and blue or white tractors. Inside the cab, however, the company does whatever it can to keep drivers happy, including spec’ing the best seats, wood grain dashboards and full chrome on the gauges, extra touches that Western Star makes it easy to do.
“Western Star has an advantage over just about all of the other manufacturers because of its flexibility in spec’ing,” Daniels said.
Daniels’ father, Dick, the CEO-turned-driver, also likes Western Star trucks.
“When he’s on the road, he only wants to drive the latest and the greatest from Western Star,” said his son.
