Things are different in Las Vegas this week. Added to the slot machine bells, honking taxis and calls of “Place your bets, please!” is the sweet sound of a Western Star mixer backing up a dirt hill in the parking lot of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Those who compete in the Western Star Serious Truck Challenge at the World of Concrete show this week are hoping Sin City doesn’t become Spin City for them on this homemade and very narrow dirt ramp, just one of the the obstacles drivers are being tested on at the event. Competitors lose points for hitting cones, having to back up, crossing lines, and various other infractions. A perfect run is 50 points and the current leader has 43 which is pretty darn clean! How quickly drivers finish the course is used only to break a tie.
On day one, 57 drivers took the Serious Trucks Challenge. They came from places such as Australia, Canada, Brazil and of course the United States. The weather in Las Vegas is almost always beautiful but on this day, it couldn’t have been more perfect. With clear skies and a sunny 70 degrees Fahrenheit, drivers at least didn’t have rain added to their list of obstacles to deal with. If they did, they’d be grateful for the Western Star hat they earned for competing. This competition is a must see if you make it to the World of Concrete show this week.
Several Western Star folks from the Engineering Group and the Product Group are on hand to answer questions and provide details about the trucks used in the event. All told, about 20 Western Star experts and a few of the Western Star girls are at the event to entertain the drivers and spectators, keep things running smoothly, judge the event and maintain the track. Stop by and say “Hi” if you’re in Vegas!
