Western Star 4900XD
Truck is built specifically for delivering large John Deere agric equipment from South Africa to remote farming areas in Africa where roads are often poor or sometimes non-existent. The customer called Agritrans has suffered bitter experience in the past where a 6×4 would make it to the delivery point only to get stuck in the middle of no-where as soon as the tractor is uncoupled from the trailer and there is no weight on the driven wheels. Thus the customer insisted that we build the truck with all wheel drive to get it out of those awkward places where the red African soil becomes as slick as wet soap. The customer went the Allison route because he also never wants to have a truck with a burnt out clutch or twisted off driveline when trying to extract itself from a soft or muddy location.
The final reason that the customer bought a Western Star is that he wanted a tall conventional truck when traveling through Africa to protect the driver should the truck hit a 2000lb buffalo or hippo. This is because it often ends badly for the driver should a cab over hit one of these animals because the driver is very close to the collision, whereas a conventional at least puts a bit of distance between the driver and point of impact.
