Since today is Friday the 13th, it seems appropriate to make sure your Western Star‘s emergency kit is fully stocked. How many of you know exactly what you need in case of an emergency? We’re going to share what we think should be on your “must have” list:
Emergency Kit Must Haves:
Flashlight – You may find options that are waterproof, shock and impact resistant, rechargable, LED or non-LED, etc. There are so many different types of flashlights out there, but make sure you have at least one. Don’t forget extra batteries if your flashlight calls for replacements.
Small Tool Kit– Standard and Phillips screwdriver, pliers, a socket set, electrical and duct tape, a multi-function knife, fuses, nylon rope, and a few pairs of gloves are all must haves. It’s hard to tell when you might need that pair or pliers, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.
First Aid Kit – This should include: adhesive strips, extra large bandages, non-stick pads, first aid cream, antiseptic wipes, pain relief tabs, Alka Seltzer tabs, and tape. Make sure everything is stores together in a case so you’re not searching for that single bandage later. Also, do not forget to have your current medications with you!
Reflective Triangles – These are often times sold in sets of 3, have a weighted base, fold flat, require no tools for set-up, and come in a storage container.
Weather Radio – Similar to the flashlights, weather radios come in a variety of options. There are options to have a very loud audible tone when extreme weather conditions are imminent and/or a police emergency or a child abduction has occurred or any type of public awareness becomes critical.
Blanket – If you or someone else is ever in an accident, it’s important to keep warm. Keep a blanket handy whether you’re sleeping in your rig or not.
Water – It doesn’t hurt to have a few bottles of water in case of an emergency.
All-in-One Emergency Tool – This all-in-one tool features: 1 LED flashlight, an emergency hammer to break a car window, seat belt cutter, cell phone charger, a red emergency beacon, and strong magnets to hold the unit to a steel surface while operating the emergency beacon. One minute of winding will provide up to 60 minutes of light, and 3 minutes of winding will provide up to 3 minutes of cell phone talk time. It’s waterproof and battery-free; just wind it up!
Miscellaneous Items – Some of these items may see a bit odd, but if you have them, you’re in good shape: pen and paper, whistle, compass, matches or a lighter, water purification tablets, hand and toe warmers, a poncho with a hood, dust masks, and pet supplies if you have your buddy with you.
Don’t be unprepared in an emergency situation ever again. If you have all of the right supplies, you won’t need to worry about luck and superstition on this Friday the 13th! Also let us know in the comments section what you think should be added to this list. You might have something in your Star that others should have, too.
Happy Friday the 13th!
